I think that is is so sad that money like always is being placed in front on natural human goodness. This is infomation on how polar bears that states how polar bears are not only dying but also suffering in every area of there life such as eating, breeding and living is extreming sad. I think that America should have a council on enviromental safety that includes the way that American company and lifestyles of Americans are affecting life all over the world and what would need to be done to stop these types of issues from happening. Stopping these things now opposed to waiting until it is too late to save the polar bears would be the best idea. However in true form to American history it will proably be too lzate by the time there is a united effort to help
here are the links that I found on polar bears

Thank you anonymous and Latasha for using my blog. I have created a new post especially for our class. You are welcome to discuss issues there. I agree with anonymous that we should work together to create a better environment. I believe change starts with the individual. Why don't we write a letter to our Virginia congressman about why we should use renewable energy such as solar and wind power rather than coal in Virginia? I will give you extra credit if you do.

Okay, sometimes i have a pretty hard time trying to figure out metaphors (Status Symbol and I Am A Black Woman). In example, when we were talking about the "white locked john", i was kinda clueless:), until you said what it was and i was like, "Oh..." So how can I learn how to understand these metaphors on my own? And why can't these "personas" speak in layman terms...? :)

Dear Whitfoster,
You are certainly right that poets do not speak in layman's terms. They like to use symbols and images to convey ideas that could be more straightforward. I treat each poem as a puzzle. If you take your time and read them carefully, you'll get a lot out of them. Poetry is not the same as everyday conversation. I think that the more poems you analyze, the easier it will become for you to figure out the figurative (the metaphorical meaning)versus the literal meaning (the obvious meaning). In the case of "Status Symbol," it is clear that the bathroom is a metaphor for equality, but also of the ridiculous things people have to struggle for. Usually, metaphors have more than one meaning, so you can interpret them in different ways. Why do you think Evans emphasizes having the key to the bathroom at the end of the poem "Status Symbol"? On a literal level, desegregation meant everyone could use the same bathroom. On a figurative level, though, the bathroom is not a place of culture and is an unclean place, so getting the key to the bathroom might not be so great. Maybe she was hoping for something greater, like a black president? I wonder what she'd think today.
Best of luck!

From the beginning to the end of the poem, Evans made it seem as if this status symbol was something GREAT... But instead it is this little white key. I read a little bit on this poem and I realized that she is very irritated and frustrated to have gotten this key. White people those days believe that we dont deserve anything in life and that key is something that we should take pride in. But the expression im getting from her is kind of bluntish. A key to a bathroom? The whites probably think that she should be overwhelmed that she received this key. That is like the worst gift you can receive. That isnt anything you need, fight for, or desire. And even though she is given this status symbol, she still is seen as the same old person (using the lower-cased "I") and she proclaims that she still has her papers... She is still the same old person that she was before she got this, probably rusty white chipped painted, key...lol

Dear Whitney Foster,
I really enjoyed reading your analysis of "Status Symbol." I agree with you that the poem is filled with irony, especially towards the white people who think that all that it takes for black people to be happy is a key to a bathroom. This poem is great because it gives insight into what it feels to be the object of someone else's ignorance and prejudices. Her use of irony is a weapon. As for your essay on Malcolm X, I would emphasize the points where he talks about people of color and their struggle to define themselves. There are points where he links together the history of African Americans to the struggle of other oppressed people. Why have people of color been taught that their culture is less than others? That is a tragedy that Malcolm X feels can only be addressed through education and empowerment. I hope these comments make some sense to you. I feel that you are doing fine because I liked your comment on "Status Symbol."
Also, Juanisha Munford--thanks for you comment on the speech class. You should have posted that under the speech class section (there is a separate section where you can post comments for that class). Please do so. I'll give you credit for you posting, but I am unclear about what you are communicating. I hope that you are enjoying the debate.

The polar bear situation is sad to hear but the fact that they want to hurt "big business" is even more troubling. I think that if there were a less costly solution to the polar bear extinction issue than it should be followed through with, but to tell businesses to stop production is not the answer.

Dear Jay Reed, I agree with your comment about polar bears, but I disagree with you as far as production is concerned. I don't think that these companies would be forced to stop production entirely, but they would have to curb their greenhouse gas emissions. Of course, the polar bear is not the animal affected by the greenhouse gases. Human beings are affected as well because fossil fuels and carbon are cancerous.

The Vaclav Havel quote:
"It is also obvious from published research that human activity is the cause of change; we just don't know how big the contribution is."
* I believe that we are contributing to what is taking place. We do alot of things in this world and not even try to do anything about it..

i think it is important to know the percentage point, why? Because I feel people should know how many human beings contribute to the change in the world. By knowing the percentage one can find out if human activity is impacted by where a person may live or their particular surroundings.
