dr.comprone where can I find the assignments I missed from the past weeks.I have broken my foot and I am able to move around like I need to.
Dear Marcus, you need to go to my website and click the link Spring 2009 Course Updates. You should find all of the assignments under Honors Composition. I update what we covered for the course every day (usually in the evening).
I think that global warming is inevitable. Though production of more energy-efficient means of transportation may slow the effects of global warming , I feel that either people will bring about global warming or the Earth will inately heat itself. Furthermore, I have noticed that while people have become less healthy so has the Earth. I believe that the Earth and its inhabitants go hand in hand and that one's health is a vivid reflection of the other's.
i have created a account
Dear Lesley, I agree with you that global warming is inevitable, but does that mean that we don't have to take action to reduce its effects? I believe that we can find ways to take action even though warming will occur. We have to because the survival of the human species and life on earth depends on it. Your view that global warming is inevitable has been confirmed by scientists in a recent report.
At first I was one of the people that believed that this issue didnt have anything to do with me. Now that I have been properly informed to the earth's condition I think that we should do whatever we can to prevent further devastation.
This is in response to the extra credit assignment on penguins. I find it bewildering that they cannot find a valid reason to the increasing decreases in the penguin's population. Its sad that they are dying off so quickly and I hope that the issue is resolved without involving tax payers money. The delayed responses from the government agencies is disturbing too.
I think global warming is definitely. I believe that people are afraid and just don't want to deal with the situation. Like Dr. Comprone said, the rise of global warming can't be reversed but the impact of it can be lessened. If don't all come together and fight this our children and grandchildren will have deal with later in the years to come. Deon Kelly
My carbon footprint is 12.90.
This is my quote from the passage A Moral Footprint- "We can’t endlessly fool ourselves that nothing is wrong and that we can go on cheerfully pursuing our wasteful lifestyles, ignoring the climate threats and postponing a solution."- I agree with the former president on this quote because, I, personally believe that global warming is here. If we don't do anything and continue to do the things we do that contributes to global warming, our planet will most definitely be in trouble.
Mr. Vaclav Havel said, "it is OBVIOUS from publishes research that human activity is a cause of change; we just don't know how big the contribution is." My response to that is the our contributions as humans and stewards to this planet is enormous. We are polluting our world more and more by the day. As technology increases, so does our pollution. As our population increases, so does our pollution. Its a wonder that scientists are predicting visible devastations to the planet in thousands of years. I would think that we should be able to see the problems today or tommorow for that matter. I just hope that we figure something out soon before it gets too late.
This is Tiffany Turner. I know have one and my name will show up Nikki
This blogging thing is really getting easy now. For those that dont know its alot like Facebook. you really should go ahead a create and manage your own "Blogger" page. You never know when it might come in handy, plus you get you own url. Just thought I would be the one to encourage everybody else to expand their horizons and share their thoughts with the world. This can go way further than Honors Composition. Oh by the way, my Carbon Footprint is 5.70 tonnes of CO2. Thanks.
John Reed, Big Dee, and Deon, thank you for your comments. I can see that we are all developing a conversation about this big problem. To be honest, I did not think global warming was as severe as it is now. The more I educate myself on it, the more I feel we should try to take action. John Reed, you said that maybe the problem w/penguins can be resolved without taxpayers' money being affected. I think that taxpayers will have to fork out a lot of money to pay for the changes we need if we want to have a cleaner earth, but like Havel said, we shouldn't think that we are wasting our money on cleaning the environment. Every generation should think that we owe the environment money. Life isn't for free. If we want to live happy lives from from pollution, we have to pay a price. I think the price tag will be far worse if we do nothing. I also agree with Big Dee--the quote Dee chose is the one that impressed me the most. Big Dee: please let me know who you are in class. Also, John Reed and Deon, thanks for your insightful comments. John Reed: you are right about blogging--I like it a lot. You can also create blogs about any kind of subject you are interested in. By the way, I will let you know my carbon footprint later today. I'll also point out what I think I could do to change my carbon footprint.
i think if we as people change our ways now that we can have a major affect on global warming today. we might not completely reverse it but make an impact

Dr. Comprone I have created my account
dr comprone the website has changed a lot i cant find the assignments. and i think global warming is swept under the rug and is only brought up when someone runs for an office and then it fades off into the sunset and i rarely hear about any funds going to the research of global warming
levonte herbert
Dr. Comprone,
I feel as if we should stop everything that is going on in the government and focus on our environment at this time. When I watch Al Gore's presentation video on your website, he made me realize that this is an issue that we should sweep under the rug. This is a problem that could seriously cause the universe to collapse. People wouldn't be living and dealing with it anymore. Frankly, if you ask me I think if we had answers to every question, solvers for every problem and cures for every disease then the world would b a lot better.

Dr. Comprone,
My carbon footprint for my car was 6.10 tonnes of CO2. My secondary carbon footprint was 7.19 tonnes of CO2. I guess i have some part in polluting the Earth, huh?
Taylor Allen, Comp II Honors
I calculated my footprint a while ago, and it wasn't that bad, but I need to recalculate it now. I hope everyone writes about a quote from Vaclav Havel on this blog. If you know a classmate who doesn't know how to use the blog, could you explain to him/her how to use it? I think it would be terrific if everyone can use the blog. I really appreciate all of the problems. Global warming is extremely serious as a problem, and it is here to stay. I do think that it is misleading that scientists are emphasizing what will happen in a thousand years when we should be studying how to mitigate the damage from global warming now. I hope that everyone is alarmed now about what is happening. We are going to see some damaging effects in our lifetime. It will probably be worse than Katrina. This is sad because future generations will suffer because of our ignorance. I agree with Levonte that many of our politicians and the media sweep the issue under the rug. They discuss global warming, but they don't educate people on what it is. Does anyone want to do a report on global warming in our class for extra credit?
Dr. Comprone i done my carbon footprint but im not sure if i really understood everything because i got a really high number that i think is a little much but my House=.56 tonnes of CO2 Car=113.01 tonnes of CO2 and Secondary=6.50. i did answer question to the best of my knowlege but the car one seems a little much. so as far as learnig something either i day way to much driving or i done something wrong.
Dear Nikki,
It is probably a correct assessment. I think what everyone has learned from the carbon footprint assignment is that all of us put tons of carbon into the atmosphere by driving. If we can all try to reduce the distance that we drive, we can do our part in trying to reduce global warming. In the long run, the government needs to make electric and hybrid vehicles as well as renewable technology more affordable. Do you think Obama's plan to spend 150 billion dollars on renewables is enough? At least it is a start, but I think we should do a lot more.
My carbon foot print was 20 tons f carbon dioxide which was below the us national avg. Driving, rec, flying was 4.8% food diet was 23.9% home energy was 67.0%
Extra Credit-
For one, I do not think that it is the right time for the country to spending money on anything other than stimulating the economy. Did we forget that quickly that we are in a recession? The whole idea of spending millions and millions of dollars on green energy while there are thousands of people without jobs seems silly. I do not know for sure whether or not all those forms of renewable energy and "green energy" will, in fact, correct the global warming problem but I do know that they will not increase job availability in Virginia. I think locally and those around me think locally that why people like me do not see how directing our attentions to a natural occurrence will solve our present dilemma: our economy.
I think that we should take the necessary steps to reduce the effects of warming, but i don't believe that enoung people are ready to give up the luxuries that cause global warming. I think it's kind of like The Day The Earth Stood Still. In the movie, people refused to change until it was too late.
My carbon footprint is 7.95
I think it's low because i'm in lawrenceville now and not at home.
To add to the global warming issues it was crazy because i was watchin i think an Ice age movie wit my daughter and the whole movie was on how global warming affected the way the animals lived and i never would have caught the issue if we have never talked about global warming in class because before you it honestly wasnt a big issue in my life so i jus thought i would share that i have a greater interest in this issue now today.
-Andrea Harris
I want to discuss the topics we were talking about in class. I don't believe that the ecomonic and environmental crisis can be solved in one blow. I think President Obama should take it one step at a time. He should solve each one at a different pace. To be honest, I don't know how he would do it.
Also, I would like to agree with Leslie. People don't want to change. Especially the younger generation with the high emission cars. They don't want to give that up even though of it adds to the cause of global warming. Another thing is that global officials don't want to believe it is happening, but it is. Just like in 'The Day After Tomorrow', they didn't believe it until it was too late.
Dr. Comprone,
I think that the Vaclav Havel had in the document Reading the Environment is similar to the Al Gore's slideshow on ur website.
They basically discuss the same matter with the same amount of passion to improve the situation. I know we were suppose to choice a quote from the article and to write about it but, I chose two quotes.
I believe that Havel stayed focus on the issue and had a a few proposes that need to be recognized as soon as possible. His tone in the article was strictly on our economy and our environment crisis. He was very strong about everything as far as his opinions towards the issues.
My first quote was "Nature is issuing warnings that we must not only stop debt from growing but start to pay it back." It also said something about whether we were had borrowed too much or what if we stop repaying onn our debts. I think we need to get on a ball and stop playing around with our monies and get right. If we were to ask the government people how would they feel if they were broke then they would probably say poor. So if you don't want to be poor then why make the U.S. broke and poor????
MY second quote was about "Maybe there will be no major catastrophe in the coming years or decades. Who knows? But that doesn't relieve us of responsibility toward future generations." I honestly agree with this quote because it's a big chance that the world could possible fix the climate on its own with the help of God. But, like it said dat doesn't mean that we forget about our future duties that we're suppose to start doing during the process.
What do you think?????

Extra Credit- I don't feel as if the penguins should be placed on the list at the current moment. There is still a relative large amount of them living on those islands. Howeer, I was shocked at the decrease on the amount of them living. if that keeps up, then they would be put on the list unfortunately.
Taylor, Big Dee, and Leslie, as well as John Reed, I am giving you all of your credit for posting on this blog. Thanks for informing me about your opinions. John Reed, I understand your focus on the economy in the short term, but as Havel suggests, can we really afford to put more trash into this planet without thinking there will be any consequences? I think the comments by Big Dee, Taylor Allen, and Leslie highlight the fact that we can't afford to neglect the issue of climate crisis now. Anyway, I am looking forward to the presentations you will make. This will be your chance to do some research on a topic and to educate others (including myself). I think we have a lot of info. on our hands, and I am really looking forward to our presentations.
Please take a look at the course updates: I put a list of potential topics with links that I found. Of course, you can find a topic that you are interested in as long as you ask my approval in advance. Let's limit the topics to the subject of reading the environment because the economic crisis is another issue entirely. I just mentioned it in connection with the environment issue.
Also, we will watch the film "The Day After Tomorrow" next week, and I appreciate the class's suggestions.
My carbon footprint is 15 tons...Let's calculate that: roughly 30,000 pounds of carbon trapped in our atmosphere. I wonder what the carbon footprint is of our entire class?
I should be walking to school, not driving. I'll try to walk next week! I hope other students will place the Havel quote on this blog and their opinions of what he says. I am giving everyone credit for the posts.
dr.comprone i wanted to know have there been previous Global Warming struggles in the past years that have been fought through.
dr.comprone my carbon footprint is 9.1 tons im hoping thats a good thing. i wonder wat my household Carbon Footprint would look like

dr comprone i still havent turned my nootbook in i will try to get it in to you by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. i been having car problems and thats why i havent been coming to all of your classes.

My carbon footprint is 17 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year, which is below the U.S. national average.
-Andrea Harris
This is my response to the penguin situation for extra credit. i think that scientist should look into the deaths of penguins more deeply. they should fugure out that polllution and global warming has a great effect on this. knowing that ice caps are melting and panguins and polars bears are becoming extinct the government should put a stop to all these big time companies. i think if the government put its foot down and do something about this we could save these animals.
DeMarcus Macklin
My favorite quote by Vaclav Havel is, "Maybe we should start considering our sojourn on earth as a loan."
I love this quote because it honestly made me sit and think that this quote is so true. Maybe if we acted like our sojourn was a loan would we treat it better and take care of the earth like we are supposed too.I believe if that was truly the case then issues like global warming and other issue we face, would not even occur. But this was an excellent article.
Vaclav Havel is not a very good writer. In his essay Our Moral Footprint he contradicts himself alot. In many of his statments he really doesn't use words to show importance. For example, he says "...could mean danger for all people on all continents." Why would he use the word "could mean" if he feels that it will happen. In other parts of his essay he is contradicting himself. One moment he is saying that "...so long as the change is slight, need not mean any threat to life." Then in the very next paragraph he says "we can't endlessly fool ourselves that nothing is wrong and that we can go on cheerfully pursuing or wastful lifestyles, ignoring the climate threats and postponing a solution." When he does this it makes me believe that he has know idea which side of the fence he wants to be on. By doing this it make the public even more confused on the effects of global warming or as he calls it "climate change". Tiffany Turner
The quote that i look up to the most from Vaclav Havel is "Hope is not the conviction that something will turnout well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out." This quote basicly explains that it is up to your effort to how well something will turnout. If you put forth the time then you should be sucessful at anything that you do.
Whenever I reflect on the problems of today’s world, whether they concern the economy, society, culture, security, ecology or civilization in general, I always end up confronting the moral question: what action is responsible or acceptable? (this is the quote form the article Moral Foot print
I chose this part of the essay because I never really looked at problems of the world until it affects me in some type of way. I heard talk about the economy and I see it effect others around me people loosing there jobs and other jobs not hiring so that’s something that affects me because I was out from my job because we didn’t have enough children at the daycare to stay open. Society to me is a group of people who have things in common so yes when some one suffers from the economy problems it affects the whole society. Many cultural backgrounds make up the United States and not just want cultural fail during our economical crises but many of all cultural are affected. To a certain degree I feel secure I’m not sure if I should feel this way. I feel what ever happens it must be meant to happy to us. I feel we as a whole are responsible for what actions we take. But if we are not well educated about the world problems everyone aren’t going to take actions on be responsible.
Dr. Comprone i will not be able to make it to class today bcause i don't have a ride to school. What are we going to do today?
Timothy: Have there been global warming struggles in the past? Yes, if you realize that there were ice ages in the past. However, much of the global warming we are going through today is caused by pollution. So, I think we could say that the global warming we are experiencing now is different because it is largely a result of our activity, e.g. our use of fossil fuels, coal, etc. Your carbon footprint is less than mine--so that's good, but anything we can do to reduce our footprint can help the planet.
Demarcus: I don't know... at least 10. I would limit your presentation to about ten minutes. Maybe you could give us some different slides about how hybrids work and evaluate which ones you think are the best. I am looking forward to your presentation.
I understand your excuse--good luck w/everything. I will make a post on the website tomorrow about what we covered. You can turn your notebook in later.
Andrea: Thanks for your comments. I am sorry that I did not get to your comments earlier. Your carbon footprint is good, but anything you can do to reduce it would even be better (the same goes for all of us). There are ways to do this (driving less, etc.). I liked the quote you chose from Havel. That is one of my favorite quotes because I do think we take the blessings of nature for granted. It is sad because future generations should be able to enjoy a cleaner earth, not a dirtier earth.
Nikki: You are right. That is one point I tried to make in class as well. I don't understand why he says that we shouldn't fear for our planet. On the other hand, as other people have remarked, he makes some excellent points. I don't know why he contradicts himself. I think one of the problems we all face when discussing this subject is that we don't know precisely what will occur because of the earth heating up. I can imagine that some species will die out. Also, the summers will be unbearable. I know that some people (pretty young) died in the Chicago marathon last year because it was so hot. I agree that Havel needs to be more assertive if he wants people to think global warming is a problem.
Nique (You are Dominique, am I right?): I think you chose an excellent quote. While you are emphasizing the economy, I think the issue of the economy is also tied to the issue of the environment. I like Obama's idea that the government and the private sector (businesses) should create green jobs to clean up the environment. It is unfortunate that we have an economic crisis as well as an environmental crisis. It is sad that people are losing jobs so quickly. That affects the environment because then people can lose their minds. I think the government should create jobs instead of bailing out big banks. I think future generations have a big mess on their hands: environmental problems that the older generation ignored and economic problems. I hope that we will adapt. I don't think anyone has an easy solution to the environmental and economic problems that we are facing, so the question is: how can we take responsibility for a problem that we don't know how to resolve easily?
Hey, guys, I am going to create another post because this post is just getting too cluttered. You can post your comments at this new post.
Dr. Comprone,
I'm writing this blog disregarding my absence in your class today.(Comp II Honors 2:30pm) I had planned to attend today, but my father called me on my to school and said that they wouldn't allow him to stand in my place. So, I had to get to the court by noon. I had to drive 3 hours to get there. I will turn my work in tomorrow. I'm just getting back because I didn't get in the courtroom until 2pm and then I didn't get out until round 4pm. Plus, I had to sign some papers with my lawyer.
So, I would like to know if you could please grant me an excuse for my absence today. I will provide the proof when they mail me my information.
Thank you for reading this blog.

How long does the essay for our powerpoint have to be?
word i think that global warming would destroy a number of resources that could help us such as the production of oxygen and wood....thats what i feel about that...... william jones
Dr. Comprone, when I was doing my research on going green all i could find was tips on how to. Would you like for me to include anything else? If so, what?
hey dr. comprone, i just have a few things to say. i really dont know much about global warming or even how it affects me but i learned a little bit today about the exxon mobile and there coniving ways, but can you help me understand a little bit more on what is going on and how its effecting us today? thanks... also i have another question when we get ready to do the presentation for midterms do we have to get in front of the class, because i have always been shy, and tend to lose point.. well alright then...catch you later
Dr. comprone my carbon footprint is 13.20
im lost what is everyone talking about when they say my carbon footprint is ____________?
i would like to comment on the Exxon mobile documentary that we watched in class on thursday. first off i just want to say i was very shocked to learn about the "exxon world". i never knew all that went on behind the scenes, im sayin i kno things happen and we never kno but come on, these people are making billions the wrong way. It almost makes me not want to go to exxon and let them take my money, i kno other gas stations arent perfect but i believe that exxon is the head of it and the other gas stations are just trying to keep up with them, since this is a competitive field. I think what really got me when they said that Exxon would aid to the Nazi during the war. the Nazi were our enemies so basically exxon is our enemy too? but im looking forward to watching the rest of this movie!

we have to go to google and look up carbon footprint calculator and they ask questions and at the end it will give u ur carbon footprint and u post what it is in a blog comment :)

The Obama administration is trying to improve the alternative technologies and at the same time make more jobs for people to help bring the country out of a recession. I say this is a wise decision on the administration’s behave. If we start now, the whole issue of global warming should decrease over the next two years. I believe developing new forms of energy such as solar panels will be a start to improving the atmosphere shell. It is never too late to improve what we all know as mother earth. New technology such as solar panels and wind turbines will do a lot to prevent global warming from happening.

My opinion on this article is a very postitive one. I think Obama project to the poor to Go green is an excellent move. I honestly agree with the Dana Bourland when she stated that there isn’t a reason why we shouldn’t be building everything green. If we start changing houses to Green house I believe we can make an impact on the global warming issue. I also think that Intervale is just the start of helping the poor out, and that the huge success that it will bring will make more apartments like Intervale to expand. Before this article I always thought “going green” was an expensive move, because you always heard of hybrids cars and other earth saving materials but most of them would make you broke before you could start to enjoy it. So this article told me that you don’t have to be rich just to go green. So I like this idea that the Obama administration is planning, and I think before we kno it, we will start building green Buildings and we will start to save our earth and help the less fortunate to survive and live a better life.
This is Scherrie. The exxon mobile documentary was boring but very educational if you didnt know bout oil. The people at exxon mobile are extremely selfish and dont care about noone but themselves. All they want is a profit even if it kills them. That is just dumb!
This is Scherrie....
The quote I chose from Vaclav is "The end of the world has been anticipated many times and has never come ofcourse." This is true in many ways. The end of the world has been brought up however, we are still living today. I believe the world is coming to an end. We have definite signs. The bible says there will be fire on earth. There is, we are in a state of war. We are using bombs and destroying our land. Homosexuality has increased. Some states are passing laws that permit and make it ok to have a gay marriage. However, it will be void in another state, they will be deemed married in their state. It is getting so crazy in the world. Chaos is everywhere and people are losing their morals and values. It is a sign from GOD. He is about to walk the earth. It may not be today, next week, or a month from now, maybe not even in my lifetime, but it is coming. I'm doing all I can to make sure I am not left behind burning on earth. In contrast to Vaclav Havel's statement I believe that the end is near and that earth is coming to an end.
This is Scherrie
Extra Credit Penguins: I find it extremely sad that penguins are in a state of extinction. Although the gov doesn't classify them as becoming extinct because their population hasn't reached a specific number they are dying off quickly. The change in the earths core is causing ice to melt in the penguins habitat. This is causing them to get stuck in isolation w/o food. The gov needs to find a way to rehabilitate them w/o it being so expensive and costly to tax payers.
