Honors Composition II: Presentations and New Comments
Please post your new comments here. Thank you for all of your comments on the previous post. I would like you to let me know what the topic of your PowerPoint presentation will be for the midterm exam (you must do these around the first week of March). I would like everyone to limit the presentation to around 10-12 slides with a works cited list at the end. There are a lot of topics listed on the course update for this class. Feel free to discuss any other subject relevant to this class on this post.

Dr. Comprone,
I decided to do my presentation powerpoint on the polar bears.By the way did you mean we had to chose a topic by the first week in March or it was due then?
My carbon foot print was 14.5 tons .. I think that is good for me.

This statment really took me back to think that my families next generation may not be here is hard to grasp. *Mecca Hall*

If technology we invest in now was to outdate in two years there would not be may people investing there money into any cars. The economy would eventually have to take the hybrids out of market because no one would buy them.

I think that its not a wise decision for obama to invest in alternative technologies and green energy. Because It's a risk for him to take by seeing if this will work and not end up as a failure.
I think global warming is not that important but it is important in a kind of way. but you dont hear anybody like that talking bout global warming. jasmine person
hey dr. comprone this is vanessa, my carbon footprint is 12 Estimated Emissions, 27 U.S Average Per Person, 5.5 World Average Per Person... I really dont know what this for...
Hey Dr. Comprone my presentation will be done on going green. When I did my research, all I could find was tips on going green. What else do you want to include in my powerpoint.
Deon Kelly
Dear Taylor: You can do your presentation this week if you have it ready. I hope that more people will finish their presentation this week.
Dear Mecca: Thanks for posting your carbon footprint. How do you think you can make it lower? The point is to try to reduce our impact. Thanks for your quote from Havel.
Dear Timothy: I suggest researching the effects of global warming. There are a lot of studies that this is going to be long, difficult struggle that will cost billions of dollars more if we don't do something soon. As for your comments about hybrids, I tend to agree with you if you mean that the technology we have now will be outdated in two years, but on the other hand, don't you think we need to start somewhere?
Dear Jasmine: You might think that global warming is not important, but when we see on the news the devastation from Katrina and from wildfires that killed people in Australia, we know that global warming has an effect. I suggest that you do more research about the subject and look at sources that come from scientists who know what they are talking about. You can look at AccuWeather--there is a site with information and daily updates about global warming.
Dear Vanessa: Your carbon footprint is 12 tons of carbon per year. That's 14,000 pounds of carbon. Every year, people in the world put more than a million tons of carbon into the atmosphere through driving and using electricity. When the carbon gets trapped in the atmosphere, it traps dangerous rays from the sun in the earth's atmosphere. An example is when you leave your car in a parking lot on a sunny day when you go to the mall. Do you ever notice how how it is inside your car? It is because the sunlight is trapped in the car, and it heats the car up. Greenhouse gases do the same thing. Right now, we know of no way to remove them from our atmosphere, so the best we can do is invest in technologies that don't pollute and reduce the size of our carbon footprint. I hope this explains the situation to you and others.
Dear Deon: MSN has a whole section where you can look at Green living, etc. Going green is a philosophy that involves reducing our impact on the environment by choosing to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle that pollutes less. You could give some ideas about how people could pursue a green lifestyle. I am sure you can find many articles and information on this subject at MSN.
Hey Mr. Comprone, this is Joaquin Rogers and this is my first blog. I really don't have a question for you at this time, but I would like you to see that im trying to catch up in the class after the class switch. I would also like to let you know that I still intend to do Carbon Emissions as my powerpoint presentation.
Dr. Comprone,
Im going to do my powerpoint on the Ozone layer. And what day are we presenting this powerpoint? Anitra Whitfield
Dr. Comprone
I didn't know somebody was doing the ozone layer already I am changing my topic What are biofuels? Is that okay for me to do this topic?

Dr.Comprone,
I feel that watching the movie Today after Tomorrow. It is helping us understand what is happening. Even though we haven't finished the movie and reading about Global warming helping me understand what it is all about.

My Carbon Footprint is 12.09 Tonnes of CO2. I learned that I have a high carbon footprint as an individual but it is not nearly as big as the country's. We also have a long way to go to reach the Carbon Footprint goal they posted.

Havel Quote: "We need not fear for out planet" and "our climate might leave no place for us"
These quotes were in the same paragraph of Havel's essay and if this is not contradicting, then I don't know what is. How can this man say don't fear, but in the very next sentence say basically you might die. It just doens't make sense.
The blog above is by Joaquin Rogers
hey dr. comprone this is vanessa, i just recently got into your class and i am almost done the assignments that i needed to do for the notebook.
i have three things that i haven't done yet which are the following:
1. 1 page on science panels
2.edit paragraph #83 on editing webpage.
3. Include brainstorming on pollution.
Also i just started my powerpoint for ou presentation and i needed to know when they are supposed to be due.
Extra Credit-Water Supply
i think the dwindling water supply is a big proble. if california keeps being in a drought it was cause many of our fruits to be bad. most of our comes from there, like our oranges. virginia itself is in a drought. being in a drought will cause restrictions on things.
-deon kelly
Dear Deon, Anitra, Joaquin, and Vanessa, thanks for you posts. As Deon said, droughts should be a problem in the future. I've been trying to figure out why before every ice age, the temperatures go up and then they suddenly drop, covering the world in ice. I understand the science behind global warming, and the planet is definitely going to heat up because greenhouse gases capture heat on the planet. I think it is terrifying that warm water currents like the Gulf Stream that heat up North America and Europe could shut down because of tons of fresh water into the oceans from melting glaciers. I've just finished reading the book Six Degrees... What would happen to the world if it gets to be six degrees? Utter devastation. Basically, there would be no life on earth as we know it. What scares me as well is that China is polluting and needs to pay the heating bills of a bilion people. The North Pole is hotter above the Chinese than it is over North America (that's no surprise because of the Asian brown cloud, a huge mass of smog and pollution that can be seen from satellites above the earth). I hate to say this, but I feel like we are building our own graves on the only place we can live. I hope that I am wrong, by the way....
You guys are welcome to present on any topic you would like as long as it deals with environmental crisis (as well as solutions to it). Geoengineering is a new idea--some people are talking about putting mirrors around the earth that would deflect the sun's rays and decrease global warming and other crazy ideas....Do any of you think this end of the winter storm is unusual?
My carbon footprint is145.28 tonnes over 19.09 years. that equates to 7.61 tonnes a year.
From the carbon footprint exercise I have learned that in order to combat global climate change I and everyone else in the world needs to cut back on the amount to co2 we emit
Havel Quote-
"Nature is issuing warnings that we must not only stop the debt from growing but start ot pay it back."
I believe that this quote basically sums up the current situation that the earth is facing concerning global warming. it uses a realistic metaphor that every person in the world can readiliy identify with. In the quote Havel talks about a debt that the world is accumulating by polluting and burning fossil fuels. If you really think about it if you accumulate a large enough debt, eventually your credit will decline and if it gets too bad then you will be rejected by everyone. The earth is slowly starting to reject the human race by making our environment uninhabitale. If people do not start to act on this then our existence on earth will cease altogether.
Hydrogen fuel could be uesed in many wonderful ways. The electric car use to me is the best way for us all it could save the PLANET and save us all FROM KILLING SPECIES. I like it...

Dr. Comprone,
Presenting my presentation I learned more about Biofuels. When trying to choose a topic I wasn't to sure bout doing biofuels. When looking into the information and doing research I found out more than I knew.
Anitra Whitfield
I did some research and it turns out they do use similar types of pumps for geothermal and heating.
Dr. comprone,
I just wanted to know my grade on my mid term power point.
Nnamdi, Mecca, Anitra, and Lesley: Thank you for your comments. I learned a great deal from your presentations. I think we will continue learning more about the environment during the second half of the semester. Also, we will watch at least one more movie, perhaps on polar bears or on penguins. I've learned a great deal in this course about this subject and about the effects of pollution. By the way, forest fires are happening in Florida right now because of drought conditions, which researchers attribute to climate change as the result of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases. I like Nnamdi's point that we owe the environment something after all these years of pollution and garbage. The environmental crisis should not be a political issue, it is a scientific issue that people need to be educated about. While there are natural cycles of temperature change, we should not try to alter these natural cycles by polluting the planet. Mecca, I am looking forward to your presentation.
i did my powerpoint on smog. i never heard of the word smog before so thats why i had chose that topic. it turned out that smog was a very interesting topic. smog has an effect on everybody because of how the air is polluted.
adriana
"the effects of possible climate are hard to estimate" what this quote saying is that they dont know what climates are doing what that why its hard to estimate it. the effects in different climates are different and some are the same. but it is no way you can estimate the effects on climates. jasmine person
Dr.Comprone, i did my presentation on "Will penguins become extinct." Personally I see what is causing this to take place. I didn't know that Global Warming is taking affect on us and our surrondings. When I first started this class I didn't know really anything about Global Warming and everything that is taking place in our world besides all the news going on. Global Warming is taking affect in our world and its us as citizens that need to sit down and take action. I don't believe that anyone will sit down and really try and save the polar bears and penguins that might become on the endangered species list. Well I'll say one thing if Exxon Mobile would stop trying to cover Global Warming up and let us do something about it then I feel that we could atleast try and take control of the matter, and do something about this situation.
Vanessa Toledo Honors Composition II 2:30pm.
Dr. Comprone
this is demarcus i need to know your office hours becaus i need to meet with you and see what am i missing i turned in most of my work but its a couple of assignments that i am missing.

My Havel Quote
"The climate is not like a pendulum that will return to its original position after a certain period."
I think that global warming will never stop. The only thing we are doing is trying to prolonging the effects global warming is having on the earth.
Brandon Jones
My carbon foot print was 14.6 tons.....

Havel quote..
will the carbon dioxide trapped in the world's oceans be released as the water heats up, thereby accelerating global warming? And how much faster do land plants and sea algae grow in a milder climate?
