African American Literature

In this course, we will study different periods in African American literature. Students will write essays on poetry, short stories, plays, and essays by celebrated African American writers.


The Novel

This is an upper level course in which students are expected to write essays on contemporary novels while employing critical theory and the concepts of literary criticism.


Speech


We will be studying the works of African American orators and the fundamental techniques of rhetoricians. The goal of this course is to make students more effective public speakers.


Honors Composition I


In this course, students will become proficient and expressive writers and critical thinkers. Students will have focused assignments on grammar, editing, and critical thinking. Students will write essays using various rhetorical skills. In this course, students will focus on reading essays on one particular subject--the current environmental crisis. There will be assigned readings under Spring 2009 course updates. Please bring a print out of the assigned readings to class. In this course, we will use a portfolio approach--all of your assignments should be kept in a writing portfolio that will be turned in during the midterm and the final exam.


Fundamentals of English


This is a developmental reading class. The course material will be the same as in other English courses, but students will be expected to complete assignments at a slower pace and more time will be spent on helping students develop their understanding of basic grammar. Students will have focused assignments on grammar, editing, and critical thinking. Students will write essays using various rhetorical skills.
