A mixture of yellow and blue,

A complement of red,

grene linked to Growan in Middle English

a word associated with the tidal movements of the sea

Or to the evergreen branches of an ancient pine tree.

Some link this wavelength to jealousy

Even to death

As much as it is a symbol of life's everlasting dance

The cry of joy in the midst of pain

The ebullience of laughter

mocking haughty

minions of death, sadness,

and despair.

Like an emerald,

You, moist earth,

Womb of all sentient life

That we know,

Compose a subtle song,

Whispering in an ancient tongue

An ineffable melody.

A lizard's camouflage,

The stem of a flower,

rich with an abundance of

chlorophyll.

This color is akin to paradise

in the Muslim imagination, it is a symbol

of nature, of untold beauty;

environmentalists discuss

the desecration of the earth

and the desacralization of a planet

whose vitality

is sapped by concrete and steel,

once standing forests knocked down

concentration camp style.

While becoming

The color of a faded dollar bill

you are yet evocative still

of a lushness

beyond, the humid warmth

of the leafy rainforest;

in the East,

the rising sun

is your symbol;

in some languages, this color is

indistinguishable from the blue of

the Pacific and Indian oceans.

It was said long ago

That no Chinese man

Should wear a hat of this color

for fear of being a cuckold.

In Africa,

you are a symbol of pan-African pride.

In antiquity, Romans celebrated

with holly and evergreen

winter solstice celebrations.
